There are a goodly number of interesting events to enjoy in the coming days.
Today, the Filipino film Sinasalitang Kultura (Spoken Culture?) will screen at Cal State San Marcos. This week a theatrical rendition of The Diary of Anne Frank opened at the Southwestern College with performances continuing until May 21st.
On Saturday there are a number of events happening in Balboa Park including a Stand With Ukraine Rally, the San Diego American Indian Health Center’s Pow Wow, the House of Norway Lawn Program, and a live concert at the House of Ireland featuring the Irish Fiddler Gerry O’Connor, who will also lead two workshops earlier in the day at a private home in University City. Also on Saturday, the So-Cal Taco Fest will be happening at Waterfront Park. Chamber ensemble Camarada will perform "music of the Americas —celebrating our binational region" at the brand-new UC San Diego @ Park & Market. In Carlsbad, Yale Strom and Hot Pstromi will perform a LouLapalouza tribute to Lou Curtiss, a foundational member of the San Diego folk music community. Proceeds will go to the completion of a documentary about Curtiss. There will be a Bob Marley Memorial Celebration at the Worldbeat Center with performances by Johnny Osbourne and Rob Symeonn.
Sunday, at Mysterious Galaxy, Xiran Jay Zhao will discuss and sign copies of her latest book, Zachary Ying and the Dragon Emperor. Ballet Folklorico en Aztlan will perform their Mitotili Pablana (Tree of Life) program at La Mesa Community Center offering an indigenous perspective of Cinco de Mayo. Heroes for Life CRY America Fundraising Gala at Royal India will feature Bollywood's Vivek Anand Oberoi. And the Planting Peace Benefit will take place at Hilton San Diego/Del Mar to help fund programs the wonderful organization, Hands of Peace.
Next Monday we plan to attend the USD Gamelan Concert for a night of new and traditional gamelan music. Looks exciting, please join us!
Forget tacos on Tuesday because there are a ton of events to choose from! The online "Japan Zoominar" Girl Culture Is No Joke will put a spotlight on the under-appreciated importance of Japan’s female oriented-culture. At UCSD Joseph S.C. Lam will give a talk on Rediscovering Chinese Art Via Music. Also at UCSD, the Jewish Studies Program will host a talk by Lital Levy on the Unexpected Career of Esther Moyal: Sephardic Feminist from Cairo to Jaffa. The San Diego World Affairs Council will host an online talk with Corinne Goria, JD titled Sewn together: Global Storytelling for Social Justice. Multiple award-winning actress and singer Lea Salonga will perform outdoors at Rady Shell. Southwestern College will present at Latin Jazz Night featuring the SWC Latin Jazz Band & Guitar Ensemble. The film Romeo + Juliet, a modern take on the Shakespeare classic, will be shown atop the Manchester Grand Hyatt downtown. The legendary band Black Uhuru will perform at the Belly Up. The Broadway show Come from Away will open in a limited run at the San Diego Civic Theatre.
Wednesday, Warwick's will host online Natalie Jenner as she discusses her new book, Bloomsbury Girls. The Neighborhood Enterprise Center will present their Taste of Culture event featuring foods from the diverse cultures found in City Heights and spotlight social enterprise efforts there. At the Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park the film A Long March. a documentary about the long and troubled history between Filipino inductees and the US military will screen. The Coronado Public Library will screen the multiple award-winning Korean American film Minari.
Next Thursday, Write Out Loud will present Kamishibai Storytime at the Mission Valley Library. The Timken Museum will present a virtual talk on the life and works of Belgian artist Jan van Eyck. The San Diego Italian Film Festival will present an online screening of the film Volevo Nascondermi (Hidden Away). IRC Refugee Film Festival will screen online A World Not Ours, an intimate, humorous, portrait of three generations of exile in the refugee camp of Ein el-Helweh in southern Lebanon. Havana-born and based pianist Roberto Fonseca will give two concerts at the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center.
Next Friday the Humanities Center Gallery at USD will host The Gout and the Guillotine exhibit. Mexican singer Emmanuel will perform at the Open Air Theatre at SDSU. Unfortunately, The Music and Dance of Bali concert at the Mingei Museum is now sold out.. However, there are still tickets for the remaining Center for World Music concerts at the Mingei, but you have to hurry because they are bound to sell out too!
Next Saturday and Sunday, San Diego Ballet will present Giselle at the Balboa Theatre.
Next Saturday, for the Chinese Historical Museum, Dr. Yong Ming Li give an online presentation based on his book, Acupuncture Journey to America, which will coincide with the opening of an exhibition by the same name. UC San Diego's 11th Annual Powwow will be held at the campus's at Marshall Field. You can experience the culture of Barrio Logan on a food, spirits and beer crawl at Taste of Barrio Logan. PASACAT will hold its 35th Annual Junior Concert at their place in National City.
